Dead Island 2 Will Launch for “Another Platform” Next Year

The wait for Dead Island 2 lasted nearly a decade, but the game did finally launch earlier this year, and turned out to be a critical and commercial success. In May, it was revealed that the action RPG had sold over 2 million units worldwide, and interestingly enough, Embracer Group – parent company of publisher Deep Silver – is expecting those sales to accelerate next year when the game launches for another platform.

Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors confirmed the same during the company’s recent quarterly earnings call (via VGC), where, after remarking that Dead Island 2 is continuing to perform to expectations in the months following its release, he added that the game will launch for “another platform” in the year ahead, which will help drive sales further.

“I think Dead Island had a really strong release window, then we have been seeing more normal performance, according to expectations,” Wingefors said. “What we now expect obviously is promotions, but primarily the addition of new content coming through, so there is a significant amount of content coming through for the game in the year, that would improve the sales of the base game as well.

“Then looking a year ahead, we would have a release on another platform that will also drive multiple sales.”

Interestingly Wingefors didn’t specify which platform the game will be coming to next year, which, as you might imagine, has sparked some speculation. Recent reports have claimed that the Nintendo Switch’s successor will be releasing in the second half of 2024– could Dead Island 2 release for the next-gen Nintendo platform not long after its release?

Currently, Dead Island 2 is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Its first expansion will launch in Q4 this year, while its second expansion will arrive in Q2 2024. Read our review of the base game through here.
